Level 4 Role Eligibility
Level 4 girls are eligible to learn and perform the following roles:
Toy Soldier
Flower
Flower Understudy
Level 4 boys are eligible to learn and perform the following roles:
Fritz
Raccoon
Raccoon Understudy
These are advanced roles with significant rehearsal and performance responsibilities. Students selecting Regular Casting should be available for all required Theatre Rehearsals and Performances, except for conflicts permitted under the registration policies, including the special policy for December 26 and 27. Students may be needed to provide emergency coverage even for performances in which they are not initially cast.
Level 4 Girls: Flowers and Toy Soldiers
All Level 4 girls will have the opportunity to learn the Flower choreography. Students selecting Regular Casting will be cast as Toy Soldiers and as either Flowers or Flower Understudies.
The final determination of which students will perform as Flowers and which students will serve as Flower Understudies will be made with Performance Casting. Students selected to perform as Flowers may, in some cases, perform both Flower and Toy Soldier in the same performance.
Minimal Casting for Level 4 Girls
Level 4 girls who would prefer a lighter rehearsal and performance commitment may select Minimal Casting. These students will be cast to perform only as Toy Soldiers.
Students selecting Minimal Casting will still learn Flower choreography during Tuesday rehearsals that take place during regular class time as a training opportunity, but they will not be cast to perform or understudy Flowers.
Minimal Casting students will:
Attend required Saturday Toy Soldier rehearsals.
Participate in Flower rehearsals that occur during their regular Tuesday class time for training purposes.
Not be required to attend Sunday rehearsals.
Be called to the California Theatre only for Theatre Rehearsals and Performances associated with their Toy Soldier casting.
Level 4 Boys
Level 4 boys may be cast in one or more of the eligible roles listed above. Boys who need a lighter rehearsal or performance schedule should contact us before registering so that we can determine what casting accommodations may be possible.
Boys’ families please email school@newballet.com with your conflicts and concerns to request a lighter casting commitment.
Casting Dates
Preliminary Casting will be posted by September 28. Preliminary Casting indicates the role or roles each student will begin learning.
For roles with both performing casts and understudies, Preliminary Casting may not indicate who will ultimately perform the role. Flower vs. Flower Understudy and other final performer/understudy assignments will be announced with Performance Casting by November 1.
Costume Requirements
Level 4 girls:
All female dancers will need a liner leotard and flesh-colored tights.
Toy Soldiers will need flesh-colored character shoes.
Students performing as Flowers will need flesh-colored pointe shoes for performances, dyed by new ballet staff.
Level 4 boys:
Boys will wear their New Ballet school uniform under their costumes, with black tights and black shoes.
Please note: All casting, rehearsal, and performance schedules are subject to change. Families will be notified of changes by email.

Theatre Rehearsal Schedule
Level 4 students selecting Regular Casting should be available for all of the Theatre Rehearsal dates and times applicable to the roles for which they are being considered. We plan to have multiple casts; however, students may be called to many Theatre Rehearsals and Performances, depending on casting and production needs.
Students selecting Minimal Casting will have a reduced Theatre Rehearsal and Performance commitment. Level 4 girls selecting Minimal Casting will be cast only as Toy Soldiers and will not be called to Theatre Rehearsals for Flowers. Minimal Casting students should keep all Toy Soldier Theatre Rehearsal times listed below available until their individual schedule is released.
As noted in the main registration information, we will not limit Performance conflicts on December 26 and 27. Please list all conflicts on those dates on your registration form and make every effort to prioritize participation when possible. This exception applies to Performances on December 26 and 27 and does not apply to the Theatre Rehearsals listed below.
Individual Theatre Rehearsal schedules will be released with Performance Casting by November 1. All rehearsals listed below will take place at the California Theatre. Call and dismissal times may shift slightly as production needs become clearer. Additional details will be provided closer to Theatre Week.

Flowers, and Flower Understudies (Act II)
Students cast to perform Flowers are expected to attend all Flower Theatre Rehearsals, even when they are not dancing on the floor if possible. This allows dancers to observe spacing, choreography, and production changes and ensures that they are prepared to cover other performances if needed. Flower Understudies should also attend all Theatre Rehearsals to which they are called and remain prepared to step into the performing cast if necessary.

Performance Schedule
We plan to have multiple casts, so students may not be called to every performance listed below. However, students selecting Regular Casting should ideally be available for all performances and may be cast to perform in all of them. As noted in the main registration information, we will not limit Performance conflicts on December 26 and 27. Please list all conflicts, including conflicts on December 26 and 27, on your registration form and make every effort to prioritize participation when possible. Please email school@newballet.com immediately if you have any questions, as our goal is to make this work for as many students as possible.
Students selecting Minimal Casting will have a reduced Performance schedule and will be cast only in the roles permitted under the Minimal Casting guidelines.
Individual Performance Casting will be released by November 1. Please note that the times listed below are estimated performer drop-off and pick-up times, not the actual performance times. Final call times and additional details will be sent closer to Theatre Week.
Students cast to perform Flowers are expected to remain available and ideally be present at the theatre for all performances for which they do not have an approved conflict, even when they are not scheduled to perform. Because Flowers serve as emergency coverage for one another, a dancer may be asked to perform on short notice if another student becomes unavailable.
The December 26 and 27 conflict exception still applies to students cast as Flowers; however, we ask families to prioritize availability on those dates whenever possible because emergency coverage may be especially important during the extended holiday performance period.
